O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high-school student. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil had received high praise from panel of judges. She suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up within the bottom three followed by the in the bottom two. The judges were stunned at this, and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. The performance she gave on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially made public by President Paul Martin immediately.
